When it comes to bed bugs, most people have a tendency to get queasy and start feeling like their skin is crawling at the mere mention of these pests. They have a tendency to strike fear in the hearts of people and anyone that has ever dealt with them in the past knows that they are far more than a mere nuisance. For those that have never experienced them, it is important to understand what they are so that they can be recognized and dealt with accordingly. Essentially, bed bugs are tiny bugs that have a tendency to only come out at night. They are small enough and good enough at hiding that they are virtually undetectable during the daytime and at night; infestations have a tendency to crawl out into the open and then feed on people that are sleeping. In much the same way that a mosquito bites, bed bugs also bite. However, the bite is often imperceptible while a person is asleep and the only clue is strange bites that appear on the skin the next morning. They typically live in furniture such as bedding, couches and chairs, hence the name bed bugs.

Recognizing Them

Bed bugs are very small and they are typically relatively dark in color, ranging from dark brown to almost black. It is almost unheard of to find just a single bug if you are really looking for them so if you suspect that you have them, your best bet is to strip the bedding and turn the mattresses over. Bed bugs have a tendency to hide in the crevices where they can go unseen and they breed quickly, so the sooner you find the infestation, the better off you will be. If you find a lot of small relatively dark colored bugs crawling around your furniture, especially in your bedding, you probably are facing an infestation of bed bugs.

Keeping Bed Bugs Away

If you do not have an infestation of bed bugs and you want to ensure that it does not happen to you, there are two things that you can do that are likely to be more effective than virtually anything else. The first is that you should keep your house clean, regularly vacuuming and changing the bedding. The second is that you should never go to a hotel room or to someone else's home and then bring blankets, pillowcases or clothing back home without washing them first. Any time that you sleep away from your own home, your first stop should be the washing machine. Do not take any of your items to any room in your home and simply leave them there. Wash them in the hottest water that is possible for that particular type of material and if possible, put them in the dryer afterward. This will help you avoid having a problem with bed bugs to begin with.

Getting Rid of Them

If you do have an infestation, it is important to realize that bed bugs are extremely difficult to get rid of. There are several products that are sold which claim to get rid of bed bugs, but the only way to truly eradicate them is to contact an exterminator that has experience with bed bugs. In all likelihood, the room will be heated to a level that is beyond that in which bed bugs are able to survive. They are then typically vacuumed up with a special vacuum that is designed to trap them. You may have to go through this process several times before your home is truly free of them. In addition, if you have an infestation, you must consider purchasing new furniture once they have bebeden eradicated. If they are in your kids’ rooms, you can purchase outstanding kids’ furniture such as bunk beds and loft beds from Bolton Furniture. In fact, you can purchase youth bedroom furniture that will complement the entire home. This will not only give your home a fresh and updated appearance, it will also help to guarantee that any bed bugs that might have been left over from the eradication process are discarded and that you can begin enjoying your home once again with new furniture.
