How to Clean a Mattress

Did you know that it is also equally important for you to clean the mattresses and not just the bedding?

You probably wash the bedding on your bed and on your kid’s furniture regularly. However, did you know that it is also equally important for you to clean the mattresses and not just the bedding? There are a number of reasons that you should do this. Mattresses that have not been cleaned in a long time can dramatically increase your exposure to allergens. They can also lead to sinus problems and even itchy skin. This is typically due to things like dust mites and the dirt and debris that come with having a mattress that has not been properly cleaned.

Of course, if you are going to clean the mattress it is important that you do so when you have already stripped the mattress in order to wash the bedding. If you have a mattress cover in place, remove it and make sure that you can place it in the washing machine according to the instructions on the tag. If you can, wash it with the bedding and make sure that you do so in hot water and add just a touch of color safe bleach in order to get the bedding cleaned and sanitized. If you cannot wash the mattress cover in your washing machine, follow the instructions on the tag or simply replace it.

When it comes to cleaning the mattress itself, it is important to use a specific technique, especially on things like twin beds for kids or mattresses purchased with youth bedroom furniture. The first thing you want to do is use the hose attachment on your vacuum cleaner and carefully vacuum the mattress from top to bottom and end to end. Be very thorough and ensure that you get into every crevice of the mattress. After you have finished vacuuming you should spray it with a product such as Lysol or something similar that will get rid of bacteria. It will also get rid of the dust mites. After the mattress has had a chance to dry thoroughly, flip it over and repeat the exact same process starting with the vacuuming and finishing with spraying the mattress down. After the disinfectant spray has completely dried you may want to apply a spray that is used to deodorize the mattress so that it smells fresh. This last step is a matter of personal preference. The most important thing is to thoroughly vacuum the mattress and then disinfect it.

After the mattress has dried you can put fresh bedding on including a clean mattress cover. This process should be done every three months for best results, but if you are pressed for time, you should do it at least every six months. You spend a lot of money on your mattresses and other bedroom furniture. When you purchase high quality items from a place such as Bolton Furniture, you have an investment that will last for years. Therefore, it is vitally important that you take care of your investment properly and thoroughly clean your mattresses on a regular basis.
